Obituary of James B. McAvinney
James B. McAvinney passed away on February 7th, 2025. Jim was predeceased by his parents Bernard and Mae McAvinney, and his beloved companion Carolyn Palermo. Survived by his sister Carmel Raforth (Frank), his niece Laura Raforth (Scott), Niece Lisa Scottow (Jim) great niece Grace and great nephew Ryan. Jim was passionate about collecting and selling antiques. He was able to turn that into a successful business; selling at many antique shows, opening his own antique shop, The Apothecary Jar. Amember of the Genesee Country Antique Dealers Association, he later created Genesee Promotions which held shows in Upstate NY. Antique dealers throughout the state participated in his shows. Jim was well-loved in the antique community. He understood the business, treated everyone with respect and went out of his way to make sure they had an enjoyable experience.
In 1982, Jim purchased the East Avenue Liquor store which he ran for many years. Traveling was another thing that he loved. Many of his trips to Europe were with Carolyn and their friends. He went to Europe numerous times. He loved talking about all the driving mishaps in Germany with Pat and Peter Burneal. Traveling to China, Hong Kong and Japan was a bucket list trip he took with Carolyn, Rina and Bernie Baron. His favorite city was London, where he saw original productions of plays, like Cats, Phantom of The Opera and his favorite; Jesus Christ Superstar. He took many cruises with Carolyn and his dear friends Jim and Pat Barclay. He loved telling us about his travels. Jim was so proud of the home in Florida that he and Carolyn had. He really enjoyed spending time there. Jim had the luck of the Irish! At the casinos, he won more jackpots than anyone could imagine. Jim always liked to have a good time, and he treasured his friends. He will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate to have known him.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 13th, from 1-3pm, at Harloff Funeral Home, with a small service to follow.
Those who wish to honor Jim can make a donation to Pet Pride of New York.
