Obituary of Annemarie Groth-Juncker

Groth-Juncker, Annemarie M.D. Pittsford: Annemarie Groth-Juncker M.D. died July 29, 2012 at home after a valiant battle against ovarian cancer, having enjoyed an astonishing two years of symptom-free life without chemotherapy, preferring alternative strategies free of side effects. She lived her last year in good cheer despite occasional severe pain ably controlled by her devoted physician and friend Robert McCann, M.D. and the nurses at Lifetime Care. She was an inspiration to all. Annemarie is survived by her loving husband of 34 years, John Groth-Juncker, many relatives in America, Switzerland, and Germany, good friends the world over, and her loyal guardians, Nero and Dolly. From the beginning Annemarie was a tenacious fighter for justice. She received her M.D. degree from the University of Berne, Switzerland, at a time when few women were admitted. After a career as a respected internist in Montreux, she served as medical director of 'Up with People', and later became certified in geriatrics. Annemarie wrote many articles on death and dying which influenced a generation of medical students. She was a pioneer in promoting house calls by physicians and received a substantial grant from the National Institute of Health to study it further. Annemarie retired in 1996 as clinical associate professor of medicine at the University of Rochester and as medical director of several local nursing homes where she was prized as a most caring and compassionate servant to the frailest among us. With her husband she found time to serve as a host family to many foreign students who to this day revere their home as a home away home and write from cities the world around. She accepted with pride several 'Distinguished Physician of the Year' awards. After her retirement she became an esteemed teacher of T'ai Chi/Qi Gong. Shortly before her death Annemarie produced a magnificent dvd 'Qi Gong for Difficult Times'. Her memory will be cherished by her hundreds of friends. Memorial Service will be held at 10:00am on SATURDAY August 4th at Christ Episcopal Church, Pittsford, NY, with a reception at a later date. Donations may be directed to the Al Sigl Center or Lollypop Farm.
