Obituary of George James Dormer

On December 8, 2018. George is survived by his wife of 55 years, Virginia; children, Michael (Markey), Peter (Birgit), Patrick (Liz) and Mary (Corey) Saines; 5 grandchildren; brother, Dan (Jean); nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother, John.

George was a graduate of Manchester High School, CT.  He was a graduate of RPI Rensselaer in metallurgical engineering.  He was an outstanding soccer and swimming athlete at both schools.   After college graduation, he was employed at the Pfaudler Co until his retirement.   During those years he was active in various professional societies where he served in many capacities.  In fact, an award was created for him by the local chapter of ASM on May 10 1971.  It was called the “Give it to George” award.  Does that tell you something about George?  After retirement he acted as a consultant for RGE and Ginna.  George also taught as an adjunct professor at RIT

He was present for many activities of his four children.  Cub Scouts, Perinton Rec Soccer, Fairport HS track, volleyball and soccer....standing in the rain for many of those soccer games and track meets. George enjoyed family activities including camping, cross country skiing, hiking and even swimming at the HS pool on family swim night.  He had a favorite diving style that would amuse his family.   George successfully tutored his kids in math as they went thru 9th and 10th grades.

During family vacations he acquired his famous sunburned smile on his chest while sitting on the beach.   We think he ate the largest serving of flounder at the Chincoteague Inn.  He always “cleaned” his dinner plate so he could have dessert!

Once retired he continued his wine making, puttered in the garden and attended his grandchildren’s events in Fabius and Naples.  The memory of his famous power dunk attempts will always make us laugh

One thing he did not like to do was repairing plumbing in his house......grumble grumble!  After most of the kids were grown, Ginny and George took up square dancing with the Village Squares Club, which they enjoyed for over 25 years.   Round dancing also became a great love of theirs.  The friends he and Ginny met through dancing brought the opportunity to vacation with some of these friends.  Maine, Colorado, Michigan, South Dakota and the Caribbean were starting points of many experiences in the national parks of our country.

George served in many capacities at his church, St John of Rochester.  He was a long time retreatant at the Notre Dame Retreat House.  After his retirement, he joined Ginny in a volunteer position at the Perinton Food Shelf.   He took care of his health for 81 years. He ate right, exercised, smiled, served, encouraged and  loved Ginny and the rest of his family until the Lord called him home.  He was THE BEST

Friends may call Friday, December 14, 4-7 PM at Harloff Funeral Home, 803 S. Washington St., East Rochester. His Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, December 15, 12 PM at St. John of Rochester, 8 Wickford Way, Fairport. Donations in George's name may be directed to Perinton Food Shelf or House of Mercy.
