Marla, Jeff and Madeline,
My heart has been heavy since hearing the news about the passing of my neighbor and golf buddy, Dave. I have only good memories of your dad and husband.
Dave was always kind to me and treated me more like a nephew and member of your family than just a next door neighbor. Some of my most cherished memories of playing golf as a kid involve Dave and some of the funniest stuff you can imagine on the course. Two of our regular stomping grounds, Lima and Riverton were great times!
Dave’s personality was in full bloom on the golf course and boy did he know how to make us laugh. I remember one particular hole at Lima, I think it was the 11th hole on the back nine, which had trees and out of bounds ALL the way down the right side. There are quite a few balls in the trees there that were “planted” by Dave and the laughter that accompanied those bad shots was priceless. I remember one Sunday morning when we were playing, it was Dave, Ed Rake, my Dad and me and Dave just came unglued. He had to have hit five or six HUGE slice balls into the trees. I can remember him going through his swing routine for each shot, trying to maintain his composure and my Dad teasing him, “Hit another one, Dave,” while my Dad, Ed and I were growing more and more doubled over, laughing and in tears. When Dave was playing well, he was pretty good, but when he was struggling, he was an absolute hoot, just hilarious. It stems from his personality, even when he was having a rough round, I always remember him saying that the next hole was going to be a birdie! Such a great attitude and so much fun to hang around with on the links!
I especially enjoyed our 9 hole evening rounds in the summer when we would run over to Riverton and get in 9 before dark. I remember riding in what I think was a white work van, manual shift, 3 on the tree or something. I forget now where he used to work. Well, anyways, those evening rounds were as great as our time at Lima and I really appreciated him taking me. That was back when my parents had split up and Dave helped make the divorce years a little less of a downer for me.
Having known and spent time with Dave was an important part of my life and I’m so thankful that I have these wonderful memories of him. In my world, Dave will always be a great man and the best friend a guy could have!
Bless you all and your entire family. I’m sorry I could not be there this past weekend, as I recently had rotator cuff surgery and didn’t think it was safe to drive myself back to Rochester with the weather and my physical limitations at this time. Please know that I was there in spirit and I’m sending you hugs from Ohio!
With much love to you all,
Michael Mancuso
