Obituary of Guy E. DeLong

Guy E. DeLong of Fairport passed away peacefully at home on June 6, 2022 at the age of 83, after a brief battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his brother, Bill; parents, William and Josephine DeLong; and grandson, Nathan VanVleck. Guy is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Elaine (Stuhlmiller); children, Lisa (Larry) VanVleck of Pittsford, Linda (Al) Fantauzzo of Fairport, Sheri (David) Battaglia of Montgomery, Texas; sisters, Dixie (Howard) Anchors and Julie (Bob) Rumbaugh; eleven grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Born in Grove City, Pennsylvania on May 25, 1939, Guy spent his childhood in the small town of Emlenton, Pennsylvania, located along the banks of the Allegheny River. He was very proud of the brick family home that his father built. After graduating high school, Guy entered the Navy in 1956 at the age of 17. After serving 4 years, he moved to Rochester, NY and took a job at Stromberg-Carlson. It was in Rochester that he met his future wife on a blind date. He later joined the Eastman Kodak Company in the 1960's, holding various positions, including manager. Guy raised his family in the Tenth Ward and was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Cathedral for many years. His civic duties involved attending the Citizen's Police Academy and volunteering for shifts with the local citizen's police force, PAC-TAC. He especially enjoyed riding alongside with RPD officers. Guy loved his family, both immediate and extended. He enjoyed attending the yearly DeLong reunion in Pennsylvania. Trips to see his sister Dixie in Virginia usually involved deep sea fishing with his brother-in-law, Howie, and he was proud of the several citations he was awarded for his big catches. Vacations with Julie and Bob usually included trips to Williamsburg, Mount Vernon and Busch Garden. Guy was able to retire from Kodak in 1991 at the age of 52 and enjoyed traveling with his wife, Elaine. Whether they were on a cruise, riding a camel in Egypt, or in a private audience with Pope John Paul II in Rome, he enjoyed the adventure. Guy and Elaine moved to the Village of Fairport in 2005. They were parishioners at Our Lady of Victory Church before joining his daughter Linda's family at St. Jerome's. Mild dementia slowed him down in his early eighties, but he never stopped driving. In recent years his bi-monthly poker game with the guys and weekly fish fry were much enjoyed. Friends and family are invited on Wednesday, June 15, 2022 from 4-7 for calling hours at Harloff Funeral Home, 803 S. Washington St., East Rochester. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10AM at St. Jerome's Church, 207 Garfield Street, East Rochester on Thursday, June 16th. Interment at Ascension Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please consider a donation to U of R Home Hospice of Ontario and Yates County.
