Mr. Hendershot was my Social Studies teacher at ERHS in the early 80's. I grew up just around the corner from him on West Filbert St. in ER. I remember walking to school in the freezing cold winter months and Mr. Hendershot would often stop and offer me a ride to school since our routes to school were the same. His car had a very loud muffler and you could hear him coming from a mile away. It was a kind gesture that I never forgot.
Mr. Hendershot was also instrumental in helping me and a fellow ERHS student get a summer job at Statewide Machinery in the early years when he was there working alongside Mr. Dembs. Mr. Dembs was my Math teacher at ERHS during the same period of time.
One time Mr. Hendershot bet me that I wouldn't be able to score a perfect 100 on one of his class tests. Whoever lost the bet would have to treat the winner to a Fish Fry dinner at Prince George's in ER. I won the bet and spent a memorable evening with him and his family at Prince George's dining on a crowded Friday evening. It was a lot of fun and a big deal to a then 15 year old kid.
Mr. Hendershot was also our class advisor (Class of '83-"Hendershot, Hendershot. He's our class advisor "Thanks a lot."-so went one of the songs that year) one year for Moving Up Day at ERHS. He was one of the most relatable, approachable, and respected teachers that I had while attending ERHS. Many students, including myself, were very sad to see him leave teaching at ERHS to work full time in the business world all those years ago.
Although I never spoke with Mr. Hendershot in the intervening years I always remembered him fondly for the positive impact he had on me while a student at ERHS. He was a great teacher and a one of a kind person. I'm very grateful for having the opportunity to have known him during my formative years as a student at ERHS and as a small town kid growing up in ER back then.
My sincere condolences to Mr. Hendershot's family.

I still remember meeting Gerry for the first time at the house in ER. We were home from Bonas on break and I was meeting Linds at the house; she was running late, but assured me I should just show up and hang out with her dad. He was sitting at the patio table outside, offered me a Heineken, and then said hello and did introductions. I have many more memories down at Bonas and at the Burton, up on the river, running into him and Ann at Syracuse basketball games, or just hanging out at the house. Each time was spent full of smiles and laughter. Gerry will be remembered fondly. ❤️

I will never forget our summers on the river. I can see him as clear as day, soaking up the sun with a Stella in hand, and the way he would throw his head back and laugh when something amused him. Gerry was a bright light who lived life to the fullest. He cherished his family and I have no doubt he will continue to watch over them. I will remember him always!
