The Learning Center, UR posted a condolence
Friday, April 28, 2023
Kolja will be remembered as intensely devoted to his colleagues and his students. He was in the pilot group of a program that trained experienced graduate teaching assistants so that they could run a training for incoming first-year graduate students to be better prepared for their teaching responsibilities. That he volunteered to do this in the early days of this program, before we could revise and improve it, speaks volumes of his dedication to making his, and his peers', teaching ever better. We are very, very sorry for your loss. May the knowledge that Kolja diligently worked to make the intellectual lives around him richer be a point of pride and peace for you.

To Kolja's Family: I have never met your husband /father/son. I do, however, take time to read about individuals who have passed and/or gone home that are shared in the UR Medicine daily @Rochester e-publication. From what I read, the world is a better place because of Kolja. As parents, you surely did something right; I hope you are proud. To Robin and his children, together you are his legacy. It will is/will never, ever be easy to have our loved ones leave us. But to know Kolja's spirit, that which truly made him who he was, will live on eternally is so magnificent! I so hope you can find some peace in knowing that. My sincere condolence to all of you. Loved ones can go, but our memories of them are ours to keep, to be stored peacefully in our hearts.

Although I never met Kolja, I felt I knew him from the beautiful stories his mother-in-law, Helen Smith, shared about his life. He was truly a gifted and blessed young man that was deeply loved by his family and friends. My prayers are with his family, especially his three precious children he leaves behind. My hope is they are wrapped in the love of Jesus as they grieve and grow and know full-well they will one day see their daddy again. To Robin, his loving wife, I pray your grief is showered with hope and peace as you begin this new journey. Always remember, every tear you and your girls shed are counted and known by God and the Holy Spirit is there to lead and guide you in this most difficult time. Donna Hagan - Dunnellon, Florida
