I had the honor of caring for Dick the months prior to his passing. I found Dick to be the quiet, old hero with a twinkle in his eye.Though life wasn't always fair to him, he fought the fight daily never complaining. He loved his wife, his life and just simply being home. I asked one day if he wanted food out after therapy and he replied, "When you have traveled the country as much as I have you just simply want to go home."
Taking Dick to physical therapy, I quickly noticed his quiet observatory nature. Just like his helicopter landings in the past, boy could Dick land a one liner comment that would take me by surprise ... he either landed a dry humor one liner or the blunt truth! Either way you were smiling laughing and amazed by his quickness.
I was blessed to spend time with Dick and Susie. It's not that often you witness a love like theirs.Though Dick's days were hard, he was very happy. It meant everything to him just being with his Susie.

It is with heavy hearts that Gill and I write this goodbye to our special friend, Dick Spear. What an amazing person - brave, kind, thoughtful, humorous and caring. We have so many wonderful memories of our fun times with Susie and Dick after they moved into Wells Landing in East Rochester - cocktails on the porch, dinners in ER, visit to WAPEDA, and just spending quality time together. Those times will be treasured and remembered. We send our love to Susie and Spencer and promise to remain in touch. With love, Gail and Gill Petri

For all the good times we shared, the laughter, the travels, the food you so carefully chopped, the songs we sang together, the holidays, the birthdays and anniversaries we celebrated, we will always hold you close in our hearts. You picked the perfect partner and together you made a great team.
JIm will never forget our first meeting when you humbled him on the bar-bowling machine. But we went on to learn that you were quite a completive athlete... biking, skiing, tennis and GOLF.
We were fascinated by your stories of the war and always enjoyed your photography.
A multi-talented man.

I was lucky enough to meet Dick and be his caregiver for 2 years, he was my best friend and made “work” something I looked forward to everyday. I’m gonna miss hanging out and sharing stories together, he was special one of a kind, someone i’ll never forget. My thoughts and prayers are with Sue and his family. Love you and miss you so much

My thoughts and prayers are with my sister Susie and his family. I will always remember him as Susie's Dick. A little joke we had. He had gone through an awful lot because of Agent Orange. He was a wonderful photographer, I always thought he should have made a book of his photos. I have pictures from him all over my fridge. He was such a great and talented man. Rest in peace finally my brother. You will always be in my heart. Love you, and thank you for your service and sacrifices

There are certain people who create a sense of gratitude that they have entered your life. Dick was my mainstay at family gatherings - his snarky sense of humor and calm, pragmatic outlook made holidays and visits so much fun. His amazing legacy will live on through his sons and grandchildren, and of course through wonderful memories of his life with Aunt Suzy, who he loved dearly and made so very happy. Dick’s sense of honor and duty was evident in everything he did - we are blessed to have been part of his tribe.

I was honored to meet Richard and Susan while visiting family in Rochester and sharing Vietnam experiences. His role and bravery saved lives. A brief meeting but a lasting memory. You have my deepest condolences
