Obituary of Mary Josephine Quinn

Quinn, Mary (Jones) East Rochester: Mary Jones Quinn, a longtime East Rochester resident, died Tuesday Sept. 21, 2010 at F. F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua after a brief illness. She was 93. She was born Sept. 25, 1916, in Oneida, N.Y. to Allan C. and Nellie C. Jones and grew up with two sisters and two brothers in Sherrill, N.Y. After finishing Sherrill High School, she attended Cazenovia College and graduated from St. Lawrence University in 1940. At St. Lawrence, she met her future husband, Lawrence S. Quinn, then of Tupper Lake, N.Y., and they married on Oct. 22, 1942. Before her marriage, she worked as a social worker at Newark State School. After their marriage she lived with him in Key West, Fla., Newport, R.I., and Maine while he served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1945, she moved to East Rochester, where she raised her five children. When she was in her early 50s, she became a registered nurse and worked at Highland Hospital. In 1977 she retired to Naples, Fla., but continued to spend summers at the family cottage on Canandaigua Lake. After sharing 56 years of marriage, Larry died in 1999. She is survived by her children, Lawrence A. of Portsmouth, R.I.; Barry P. of Chicago; Martha Q. Hussain of Denver; Jeffrey C. of Naples, Fla., and Elizabeth Q. Barnard of Grants Pass, OR; thirteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Friends may call SUNDAY 4-7pm at the HARLOFF Funeral Home 803 South Washington Street in East Rochester. A Memorial Service for Mary will be held at 10:00am on MONDAY in Creation Chapel at White Haven Memorial Park.
