My condolences to the family of Roger Eckers. Back in the early 60's, I was a young guitar student of Roger's in Hopkins, Minnesota. I owe much of my life's experiences to Roger, as he had guided me toward my future as a guitarist and guitar teacher. I performed in groups, recordings, and overseas. Thank you Roger Eckers. May you rest in eternal peace.

Sending my heart felt condolences to every member of Roger Eckers family. And a thank you to the family for writing such a full story of his life. I was a flute/piccolo student of Mr. Eckers, graduating from Rush Henrietta in 1969. I don’t really remember how many years he taught me, it certainly was most likely at the beginning of his career with Rush Henrietta and I remember him helping me both with the piccolo part in Stars and stripes forever as well as my upcoming senior solo night with a Vivaldi piccolo concerto. Bob Boyd was still the band director then. The summer before that Mr. Eckers had attempted to start the first music theory program during summer time. I’m not sure there were enough of us to do that during the summer but I do remember my senior year running from phys ed class and the districts first swimming pool at Sperry and running to Music Theory class with dripping wet hair.
I continued playing flute and piccolo through college and beyond., Joining the Brighton symphony orchestra and various and ensembles through Hochstein. Mr. Eckers was a helpful and influential part in this as well as encouragement in my later years to continue playing.
My husband recently reminded me that we still have Roger’ Moving On album with his and Bob Boyd‘s autographs!
In years prior to the Covid lockdowns, my husband and I would enjoy listening to Roger play at Charlie Browns and was looking forward to having my brother, a saxophone student of Rogers, come us for more of Rogers great music.
Your full story of Roger’s life tells so much more of such an amazing life and the legacy he brought to his family and so many of us. May all those love filled memories help bring smile, comfort, and peace to your hearts. Barbara Eksten Nardone

I heard Roger for the first time at Teddy Bears Carousel Lounge on Lyell Ave in Gates. That started a 55 year friendship. A friendship that covered not just years but events. Weddings, funerals, clubs, late nights several cocktails and of course loving relationships leading to children, grandchildren, great grandchildren. Roger was supposed to be here forever. He was bigger than life, on and off the bandstand. I have countless memories to fall back on but would still have preferred to make more rather than rely on those already made. Prayers for Debbie and all of Roger’s family. I will always remember your booming laugh and brilliant playing. “Time for a taste my friend” Johnny Walker Red, splash and a twist. Good bye my friend.

I am shocked and saddened , I found out today of Roger's passing. I was Sperry HS Class of '79. I credit (and blame LOL) Roger for my sarcastic humor to this day. So many funny stories , too many to tell. I knew him as my teacher, then as a customer when I worked at Wendell Harrison Music, and as a friend. I was looking forward to seeing him and Fred Costello again at Charly Brown's Restaurant in Penfield as we turn the corner on COVID. Roger touched so many lives as a teacher and a musician. He will be missed.

So saddened to hear this news about Roger. I have known him since he played at the Fountain blue with Joyce Love and I had the honor and pleasure of sharing the stage with Roger when we were backing up Gene Ferrari at Hochstien school of music back in 2013. There will never be another saxophonist like Roger. Gone way to soon. R.I.P my dear friend

Incredibly saddened to hear the news of Roger's passing. We can't imagine camp without seeing Roger mowing his impeccable lawn, walking his beloved dog(s) and his beautiful saxophone serenading us. We'll miss watching he and Debbie give a beep and wave while heading out to slay the Chaumont Bay perch. We will keep Debbie, and all who loved him, in our thoughts and prayers.

Roger was an amazing person who always made you feel like you were the only one in the room when he came to your table to say hi during a gig break. I know because he made me and my wife Sue feel special every time we came to see him, his band, and/or Fred Costello at Hatties, The Marriott Thruway Hotel lounge, and Charlie Browns.
I learned so much from him just watching him go table to table during his breaks. And what a talent he was. A true genius on all his instruments. How we will miss him-but an energy and spark like Rogers will always remain with us.

Debbie, we were so incredibly heart-broken to hear the news of Roger's death. We are so very, very sorry. You and your entire family have been in our thoughts, in our prayers and in our hearts. We feel so incredibly blessed and grateful that Roger shared his immense talent and love for music with Ricky, and that he taught Ricky about the value and importance of hard work and perseverance. Ricky was so thrilled that Roger asked him to perform with him at Charley Brown's restaurant a few times -- such a wonderful memory for the three of us!! Roger was truly a special man and he will forever be in our hearts.
Sending love, hugs and prayers,
Rick, Joann and Ricky Lipinski

I'm so sorry to hear of Rog's passing. He was my band teacher in high school. I dropped out of band in 11th grade and graduated in 1985. I ran into him at one of his gigs in the mid 90's, he was blowing into that sax, stopped, looked at me and said, "You should have practiced!" I got the biggest kick outta that! It was so good to catch up with him! He had a huge impact on my life and so many others! My condolences to his family. You'll be missed Rog! We love you!

There a few people in life that you meet and are truly genuine and kind. Roger was that - plus talented. I first met him when he was 22 playing at a New Years Eve party.
He always lit up when he saw me after that. I will miss him.

I had the distinct pleasure of playing with Roger several times in the Olean, Ny area, where his mother in law resides. Roger was a joy to work with! The customers really loved his playing, and got a kick out of his antics. He was so easy to work with, and always treated me as an equal…no ego there. I will miss him very much!
