Obituary of John R. Spears

John R. Spears passed away on April 29, 2023, at the age of 79. Born on March 16, 1944 to the late Richard H. and Eleanor C. (Hovey) Spears in Rochester, NY, John attended Gates-Chili High School, graduated from Pittsford Sutherland and enjoyed playing baseball as a catcher and wrestling. After high school, John served in the US Navy and then attended school to become an electrician, a trade he excelled at until his retirement. He was a proud member of I.B.E.W Local 86 and happily volunteered with their Sunshine Club. John was an avid golfer and bowler and fan of the NY Yankees and San Francisco 49ers. He loved spending time with and talking about his longtime friends from work and cherished his close friends and neighbors from Squirrels Heath Road in Fairport. John is predeceased by his sister, Sandra (John) Norris, and survived by his brother, Jeff (Yong) Spears, son, Kevin (Karin) Spears, daughter, Deanna (Brian) Hendricks, grandchildren Daniel, Trevor, Claire, and William Spears; and Brodi and Lianna Hendricks; nieces, Kate Garms and Sarah Norris and nephew, Richard Spears. Calling hours will be held at Harloff Funeral Home, 803 South Washington Street, East Rochester, on Thursday, May 11, 2023, from 4-7pm. Friends and family are invited to attend John’s funeral Mass at the Church of St. Jerome, 207 Garfield Street, East Rochester, at 10:00am on Friday, May 12, 2023. The mass can be viewed via live stream by visiting www.stjeromerochester.org. A brief reception will follow at St. Nicholas Hall, 206 Madison Street. Interment at White Haven Memorial Park, 210 Marsh Road, Pittsford. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the Knights of Columbus Council #3676.
