Will and I sure wish we could have made the trip to Rochester for Bob's visitation, and funeral service. The picture above is of my Dad (Barney Reed), Joe Germano, and Bob at the Eldorado ship reunion at Virginia Beach, Va. in 2013, the last time we saw Bob. Bob was definitely a "one of a kind" kind of person who definitely made the world a better place just by being in it. He sent us a small container of the soil from Iwo Jima upon return of his trip there in 2019, along with the first book he had written. Often I'd receive saved photos of him with my Dad from service days. Once, in the 1970"s he and Elgina visited my parents in Virginia.
Our last conversation was in early May and I could tell his health was changing because this was the first year in a long time that he chose not to plant tomatoes, or eggplant. Additionally, he spoke of starting to eat all the frozen food that he had prepared and had left in his freezer in preparation for possibly moving somewhere like the VA where he could get additional help with dressing, etc. He spoke of praying for our family every night. He was just the best!!
Undoubtably, Bob had good genes to have lived to102. However, I believe it was the love and support of his numerous family members, Al Decarlo, and other nearby friends that supported his long, active life. His body gave out, but his mind was sharper than most until the end. Words can not describe how much he will be missed. I would love to purchase the book that will soon be published of his memoirs. Please contact me with info. Jim Persichitti, nephew from Ohio has my FB info. Prayers for all.
